Alex rode in careful silence, as the woman beside him grew more agitated. With each sound of the voicemail chiming in the Asian beauty gripped the phone a bit tighter. A low growl of agitation escaped her as she flung her phone into her purse. Alex opened his mouth to say something, but before he could a ringtone chimed loudly in the tense silence of the car. Munin wasted no time in fishing the phone out and bringing it to her ear.
"Hello? No, I haven't been able to reach them. That doesn't mean shit. I will not and you will not there is no proof that they did it. In fact everything points to them not having done it in my mind."
Munin's barely tethered patient's appears to fray and Alex begins to brace himself for the eventual snap.
"I am not being god damned fucking biased. And before you say another word to the kettle you pot; you might want to consider that this incident didn't involve explosives. Yeah what about Alex Cross? I'm arguably harder on him than anyone else currently signed to this company. Again pot you may want to watch what you say to the kettle."
Munin let out a sigh while rubbing one hand across her forehead.
"Listen... this is not the time for us to argue. Do me a favor and let me know what you find when you get home. Yeah, good fucking night."
Munin literally just chucked her phone over her shoulder with a scoff of disgust.
"This is ridiculous...everyone knows who did this. It's just a matter of figuring out how the bitch pulled it off!"
Alex shifted in his seat after giving her a side long look.
"Maybe I should get a hotel room..."
Munin gave a sharp furious laugh at that idea.
"Fuck no."
Alex's eyebrows rose in surprise of how much vehemence she managed to stuff into two words.
"Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you should move in. It's too soon for that, but I'll be damned if I will let anyone dictate my fucking private life."
"I've been looking at apartments so hopefully I can find something and maybe make your job a bit easier."
Alex rubbed the inner thigh of Munin in a comforting fashion.
"Not sure who's doing this but everyone knows you're innocent."
Munin chuckled a bit at that.
"Maybe not innocent, but I've poured a part of my soul into this company. I will not stand for anyone trying to tarnish or belittle that."
"As you shouldn't. But fuck them."
A small sigh was the first sign of the petite woman attempting to relax.
"You knew when you opened this company that someone would be right on the other side just looking to try and take you down. Nathan used to tell me stories all the time about how people kept trying to take GZW away from Tate when it first opened. Unfortunately I'm afraid this may be the first in a long line of attacks towards you."
He gently squeezed her thigh.
"But I'll be by your side for every single attack I promise you. You won't fight this alone."
Some of her fury faded at his words, and the look she gave him was grateful.
"Thank you."
"My pleasure. It's the least I could do."
He smiled at Munin as he leaned back into the seat. She sighed in an attempt to let off some steam.
"Besides this new "unreal" mess, the show was a big success."
She glanced at him with pride in her eyes.
"Congratulations, Orton was not an easy opponent."
"He wasn't? I thought he was a little punk bitch to be honest."
A chiding sound from his companion followed his statement.
"Arrogance can be unattractive in excess, and you will need more than your self confidence to get through your next round."
As much as she tried to focus on something besides the nights events her fingers beat a distinct rhythm into the wheel.
"Oh I have no doubt about that. I'm not stupid Nin I realize it's gonna take everything I've got and then some to get past Bombtrax"
"Good. I didn't hand select those two for this promotion because of Youth's comedic value. They are a perfect working unit. My element of chaos..."
Her delicate features twisted with fury for a moment before smoothing out once more.
"Though at the moment they are not on my A-list."
"Who is besides me? Since I'm always on the top of your list. Might be your shit list but it's still your list."
He couldn't help but laugh.
"As for Youth's comedic value he's about as funny as a Lama with leprosy."
Munin couldn't help the smile that curved her lips.
"I find him very entertaining, and besides you there is: Raike, Harris, and our new acquisitions..."
Alex rolled his eyes.
"I really hope you like the restaurant I booked. I mean, the only reason I was able to get these reservations is because he's an Alex Cross fan. I couldn't even begin to tell you all the things that guy asked of me, I had to take a shower after I hung up the phone I felt so dirty."
Munin glanced at him in confusion.
"I own a share in that restaurant..."
An uncontrollable laughter bubbled up from her throat.
"All you had to do was mention my name. Jacob took complete advantage of you."
Alex mumbled under his breath as he looked away from Munin.
"Bastard."
He quickly looked back over at the young lady driving.
"Can I blast that fucker in the face when we get there?"
"I don't mind though I can't promise he will be working on Valentine's Day. I really can't wait to get home tonight though."
"Can't wait for tonight? Why is that if you don't mind me asking?"
He tried to give her a seductive smile but it only came off as more of a look of constipation then anything. Munin giggled at his antics. She was more happy than she could say to have his company with her tonight. For while she could still feel her fury coursing through her, raging just below the surface, it was controlled. The last thing she wanted was to go home blinded by fury.
"I will be happy to get home, get comfortable, get a drink, and watch Kingdom Hospital. I has been a long night."
"Well I'll be happy to rub your feet once we get back. You've been on them all day so I figure you could probably use it."
She deftly changed lanes to take the next exit.
"I won't say no, though you are the one that just won his first match in the company."
"Well you can rub my feet in a few weeks when I win the title."
"Ha, consider it a deal."
"By the way, congrats champ. I meant to tell you earlier but things have been hell around here with me trying to find a place to stay and the shit going on in PAW. Actually, I got you something special for Valentines Day to maybe help you out some. Hope you like it."
She gave him a side long look at the mention of her recent victory.
"Ah, so you heard about that?"
She carefully navigated her way through the rural area, and found her own private road by memory more than sight. The night was dark on the wood lined road with very little in the way of lights or visible land marks.
"I might not be on the roster anymore but I try to keep up to date with the goings on when I can."
He paused for a moment.
"I'm proud of you."
She glanced at him. His words meaning so much more than most would ever know.
"Thank you Alex, I'm proud of you as well."
They rode in comfortable silence for the rest of the drive, and both let out a sigh of relief when they finally got out of the car. The house was dark and quiet when they entered. Travis was staying at a friend's house, so they made no attempt to be silent as they made their way to the kitchen.
"That left over stew in the refrigerator sounds awesome right now."
"I'll warm it up if you want to go slip into something a bit more comfortable than work clothes."
He rooted around in the refridgerator and pulled out the left over stew setting it on the top of the oven before reaching over and grabbing a large pan and setting it on one of the eyes. He poured the remainder of the stew into the pot and set it on the eye before turning back to the refrigerator.
"Should be warmed up soon. What can I get you to drink?"
"Sweet tea sounds good. Thank you..."
Her voice trailed of as she picked up a large postal bag. Upon ripping it open with perhaps far more fervor than necessary, a rather large packet papers.
"Oh this is too perfect."
She excitedly began to flip through the packet of papers, after blindly finding a seat. Alex walked into the room holding a large glass of tea as he set it down on the small table in front of her.
"What's that? Some of Travis homework he forgot to do? Or maybe it's a note from his school?"
She carefully felt for her cup since she refused to remove her eyes from the papers.
"No I stole a hair brush from Unreal's office at the fun house. Then I sent it off for forensic analysis, and had the results sent to a private investigator. I've been waiting for the results."
"Anything good?"
The smile slowly left her face, as she continued to read.
"Yes and no."
With a sigh she pushed the papers to the side. She was suddenly too tired to be angry.
"I know who she is, and so Unreal has become very real. I think I'll just wait here for my stew."
"It should be ready let me go check."
Alex disappeared into the kitchen leaving Munin alone with her thoughts. It didn't take long for him to come back with a large bowl of stew which he sat in front of her.
"Anything else my dear?"
"No, but thank you. Some how you make me feel more human when I get lost in myself."
"Whatever I can do to help.
He sat down beside her with his own bowl of stew.
"Are you ready to start your show?"
"No I'd rather watch it on the big screen. Shall we?"
"Sure let's go."
Alex scooped up the two bowls of soup as Munin grabbed the glasses and the two disappeared into the other room as the scene faded.
"Hello? No, I haven't been able to reach them. That doesn't mean shit. I will not and you will not there is no proof that they did it. In fact everything points to them not having done it in my mind."
