Alex had gotten used to the fact sleep would elude him every night. For almost a year he learned to survive off a couple of hours of sleep. This limited amount of sleep turned out more hurtful than helpful. He found himself turning to anything and everything to fill the void of sleep which kept him in a constant stream of trouble. Nights were filled with binge drinking, sex with random women and occasional abuse of pills which of course led to many nights spent inside a jail cell alone and wondering what had happened. He hoped when he left GZW things would get better, that perhaps a change of scenery would cure his problem but if anything it got worse. While he had gotten used to three and four hours of sleep once he left GZW that number dropped to two and three a night if that. During one stretch he found himself going two or three days without even an hour to recharge. Coming to PAW he found things had actually gotten a bit better, save for a couple of times he had finally gotten into a regular routine of sleeping through the night. Being able to sleep meant less time to devote to things that could potentially kill him. His drinking had become almost non existent save for a glass of wine or an occasional beer. His addiction to pills and sex with random women had all but disappeared. He couldn't tell you the last time he slept with a stranger or even took an aspirin. Things were getting better and Alex was finally getting back to his old self.
Munin NO!
A bare chested Alex sat straight up in the bed, sweat covering his body. He took several deep breaths as he searched the room only to find nothing but darkness. He looked over at the clock to see it was almost four am, he hadn't gotten to bed until a little after two. He tried to calm himself as he took a few cleansing breaths closing his eyes in the process. This had been going on the past couple of weeks but thankfully no one had noticed a change, at least he hoped no one had noticed a change. He had found himself drinking a lot more than usual even getting blackout drunk a couple of times. He threw the covers back and swung his legs out of the bed as he sat on the edge resting his arms on his knees, hanging his head down in the process.
Fuck!
He sat up and slammed his right fist into his bare knee before standing up revealing a pair of light green boxers. He grabbed a pair of khaki cargo shorts and slipped them on before grabbing a nearby black sleeveless shirt with an American flag on the back and pulling it over his head. He grabbed his cellphone off the nearby desk and put in his front right pocket. He ran his hands through his hair a couple of times before grabbing a black baseball cap off the nearby bed post and putting in on backwards. He opened the door to his room and tip toed down the hallway trying his best not to make any noise. He peaked into Travis room to see the television still on and his Fallout game paused on the screen. He shook his head before pulling the door closed and stepping down to Munin's room, finding her peacefully in her bed. He stood still watching her for several long minutes before pulling the door closed and heading down the stairs towards the first floor. He sat on the bottom step and slipped his grey tennis shoes on before grabbing his keys and wallet off a nearby table and heading out the door.
It was still dark outside as it would still be a couple of hours before the sun even started to come up. The sixty degree weather felt great against his bare arms as he pulled a pair of earbuds out of one of his pockets and placed them into his ears. The roads were almost empty save for a few people who were probably headed off to work. Without a second thought Alex took off running unsure where exactly he was headed, honestly he just needed to clear his head right now and being alone for a run with nothing but his music was a step in the right direction. He feared these sleepless nights would cost him his job at PAW but even worse he feared it would cost him his relationship. He had tried so hard to mend the fences he blew up a year ago at GZW. While things had gotten better and they were close he couldn't help but question whether they would ever be more than friends again. He knew it was very possible that Munin couldn't see him as anything other than a friend after all he had done and he deserved nothing better. He didn't deserve her kindness or her opening her home to him once more. The only thing he deserved was a kick in the balls and a chair across the head but he was glad he hadn't come to that yet. If he couldn't get his act together it might come though.
He turned the nearby corner and took off at a full sprint pumping his arms as he pushed himself harder and harder. It was either this or drink and honestly, if you're binge drinking at four in the morning you've got a serious problem and need help. He might not be drinking but he knew he needed help, a person to talk to, a person he could rely on to keep his secrets. He didn't want to bother Munin more than he had to because lord knows she had her plate full. Taking over PAW by herself, dealing with loose cannons like Bombtrax and then adding her recent shot at GZW and you had someone with more than they could handle. Leaving GZW was one thing but calling everyone out and then taking the title with her put a target on her back you could see from the moon. It wasn't if GZW retaliated it was when. Whether in the form of a lawsuit or in the form of an all out assault by whoever was still on contract Alex knew it was coming and his problems only paled in comparison to that.
Several miles passed as Alex continued to run unsure where he was headed. He stopped for a moment and bent over resting his hands on his knees as he took a couple of deep breaths to try and cool down a bit. He stood up and rested his arms on his head as he turned and headed across the parking lot of a twenty four hour diner, pushing the door open to a small jingle and taking a seat in one of the corner booths. He pulled out his cellphone and placed it on the table after checking the screen for any missed calls or text and turning off his music. A young blond approached him with a small flip notebook in her hands.
What can I get you honey?
Just a cup of coffee black.
Sure thing. Anything else? The pancakes here are pretty good.
No I'm good but thanks.
I'll be right back with your coffee.
Something on your mind kid?
Alex turned to look in the booth behind him at an older gentlemen wearing an eye patch.
Do I know you?
No but you look like you need to talk to someone. I got nothing better to do so thought I'd offer an ear.
Alex turned back around in the booth putting his back to the other man.
Thanks but I'm good.
Fine by me. I'm not the one losing sleep.
It didn't take Alex long to turn back around to face the other man.
Who said I was losing sleep?
It's written all over your face kid. Sleepless nights, secrets bubbling to the top, girl problems the list goes on. Just to be honest you've got a shitty poker face.
Alex couldn't help but chuckle as his coffee was quickly brought back to him and set down.
Coffees on the house. If you change your mind and want anything else just let me know.
Thanks.
The other man slid out of his booth after tossing a ten dollar bill onto the table. He stopped briefly at Alex table and handed him a card.
You change your mind and want to talk let me know.
Alex looked at the card before looking up to say something only to find the other man gone. He looked back at the card before flicking it between his fingers.
Well that was fun.
He sat quietly and drank his coffee as he watched the sun begin to peak off in the distance. Munin would be up soon and he needed to be back before anyone realized he was gone. No sense in making her worry about him, he was worried enough for the both of them. He tossed a couple of dollars on the table and slid out of the booth before leaving the diner.
Munin NO!
