Today was going to be a new chapter in the life of Johnny Sykes. The twenty four year old was going to be taking his three year old son all the way across the big ocean to the country of Japan. That was going to be quite the big step for the two of them. Course the thing about Johnny was. Some would say that he wasn’t all there in the head. He didn’t really think before he did things. A lot of the things he did were gone off a whim. That was the case with deciding to take him and his son to Japan. Cool thing was Johnny had managed to talk his best friends and tag partners over the years to come see them off.
All four of them just happened to be hanging out in the lobby of the hotel. Jax sitting in his stroller sucking on his sippy cup. Johnny standing there with his old gameboy color in his hand. Enjoying himself. David Xavier Christensen and Eryk Ince were standing there exchanging small talk with each other. Their attention was brought to a booming voice that echoed throughout the airport.
“Flight 167 to Japan will be boarding in ten minutes. Please head to your terminal.”
Frowning for a second. Only because Johnny knew that he had to pause the game. He slid the game boy into his pocket and then looked up with a bit of an excited expression on his face. His attention falling on both D.X.C and Ince.
JOHNNY SYKES: Well that’s us dudes! We gotta be getting out of here.
He grabbed a hold of the stroller carrying his three year old and started to prepare to push it off. He was waiting for the goodbyes of his partners. Turns out the young man was going to get a little more than that.
D.X.C: Are you sure this is what’s best?
JOHNNY SYKES: Uh why wouldn’t I?
ERYK INCE: You can’t exactly be trusted on your own.
JOHNNY SYKES: Huh?
D.X.C: C’mon Johnny. We’ve been friends for over ten years. You can’t tell me that you haven’t caught on. . . You’re a little bit on the slow side.
ERYK INCE: . . . I don’t know if I’d say slow, but you’re a bit childish. A bit mischievous. A bit curious. At times you’re even a little naive and very clueless.
D.X.C: I love you to death bro. I love my nephew to death, but I honestly don’t know how you’ve made it this long with Jax by yourself.
The three year old looked up at his Uncle David with his face twisted up in confusion. No idea what was truly being said. All he knew is that his name was being called. Johnny on the other hand was looking at the both of them with the same expression. None of it truly making much sense to him at all. All of the sudden he started to raise his hands about a bit.
JOHNNY SYKES: Wait. Wait. I know what this is about.
D.X.C: You do? You mean you’re really getting it?
JOHNNY SYKES: Duh, David!
ERYK INCE: We finally got through to him!
JOHNNY SYKES: You guys are upset that I’m going to Japan with Jax to hunt down Godzilla and I didn’t invite you to tag along!
D.X.C: What?!
David’s eyes looked like they were about to pop right on out of his head. They tried to explain the issue and it just seemed to go right over Johnny’s head. Now along with not getting what was being said to him. At the same time Johnny didn’t exactly understand when something was considered a hypothetical question.
JOHNNY SYKES: You guys are upset with me that I didn’t invite you to come along and hunt Godzilla with us.
ERYK INCE: Johnny, you realize that Godzilla doesn’t exist right?
JOHNNY SYKES: Don’t you speak such blasphemy!
D.X.C: This is what we’re talking about Johnny! This right here! You’re going to a different country with no plan other than to hunt down a mythological creature from a movie!
JOHNNY SYKES: Godzilla is very-very real! I’ll prove it when Jax and I capture that big mother-lover and become famous because of it!
ERYK INCE: Well, you’re already kind of famous for being a professional wrestler.
JOHNNY SYKES: But I’m not famous like I’d be famous for capturing Godzilla! Gosh, use your brains guys!
D.X.C: That’s the problem, we are. You aren’t.
The thing about David was he had always looked at Johnny like his little brother. He had gotten Johnny into wrestling. He had a big hand in training him. They had traveled the world together. Won tag team championships together. Beat the hell out of each other in one of the best wrestling matches of 2008. Now Johnny was making such a decision where he was on his own, with his kid none the less. David felt like he had to protect him and try to do something to prevent it. That wasn’t going to be the case.
JOHNNY SYKES: We’re outta here haters!
Quickly spinning the stroller a little more holding the three year old. Johnny began to walk away leaving his friends behind. It just didn’t click in the mind of the young man where his friends were going with things. That could have been because Johnny might have something seriously wrong with him from a mental standpoint. He never got it looked at because he doesn’t believe there’s anything wrong. Then again maybe Johnny was just a carefree human being that was very different from the rest of the world. David and Ince stood side by side watching their friend walk away.
ERYK INCE: You know how big we just messed up by letting him go right?
D.X.C: Yeah, but what else can we do?
ERYK INCE: I don’t know but I don’t really feel like flying to Japan when he gets himself arrested!
D.X.C: Sometimes, you just gotta let people spread their wings. Johnny will be back.
It was hard for David to let go because of how close he and Johnny were. Not to mention because he felt the way he did when it came to having to protect Johnny. At the same time Johnny was a grown man to a degree and he had to let the guy do whatever he wanted. David slightly shook his head and turned himself around starting to walk away. Ince starting to do the same to catch up with up his friend. David would turn out to be right. Johnny was going to be back. He’d return. Thing was no one expected it to be as long as it was.
** 6 YEARS LATER **
Fresh off a flight from Japan to Pittsburgh. Johnny was walking through the airport with his now nine year old son walking beside him. Little Jax sure had grown up in the last six years. Carrying his own little duffle bag full of things while Johnny dragged the most of their luggage behind him on roll-away suitcases. The youngster was intrigued by their sudden arrival to Pittsburgh. Seemed like Johnny had kept him in the dark about it.
JAX SYKES: Are you going to tell me what we’re doing here?
JOHNNY SYKES: We’re moving back to Pittsburgh!
JAX SYKES: Why?!
JOHNNY SYKES: Our mission to finding Godzilla was a bust son.
JAX SYKES: That’s because Godzilla isn’t...
JOHNNY SYKES: Don’t you dare say it!
He shouted quite loudly. Enough to get people to start looking over at the two as they walked through the airport. Jax was quick to be quiet. Not because of his father's somewhat order but because he felt embarrassed by all the folks looking at them. Johnny on the other hand didn't seem to care. In fact it was like he didn't even catch on.
JOHNNY SYKES: Until I get some things squared away. You’re going to go stay with your Uncle David.
JAX SYKES: I don’t know him!
JOHNNY SYKES: Sure, you do. He was around a lot when you were a baby. He’s like family and he’ll take real good care of you.
JAX SYKES: Why can’t I go with you?
JOHNNY SYKES: Because I don’t know what the rules are to taking your kids to work.
JAX SYKES: Work?
JOHNNY SYKES: Mhm! I am making my amazing return to wrestling!
There was such enthusiasm in the voice of Johnny's voice. Rightfully so considering it had been six long years since he had been in a wrestling ring. Jax just arched his eyebrow a little bit in confusion.
JAX SYKES: And I can't go watch you wrestle?
JOHNNY SYKES: Like I said kiddo. I don't know the rules on bringing your child to work.
JAX SYKES: Then let me go and buy a ticket.
JOHNNY SYKES: I don't think that's a good idea.
JAX SYKES: Why not?!
JOHNNY SYKES: I gotta wrestle in Louisiana. They got man-eating Alligators out there! I'd be the world's worst father if I let you get eaten by an Alligator!
JAX SYKES: Dad, I think I'm smart enough to stay away from an Alligator.
JOHNNY SYKES: Too dangerous pal, I just can't allow it.
JAX SYKES: God, you always treat me like I'm a baby!
An annoyed Jax started to speed up with his walking. Leaving his father behind him by a couple of feet. Johnny simply smiled shaking his head a little. One day Jax would understand that he was just protecting him. The more important topic at hand though was after six long years. Johnny was going to be returning to professional wrestling. That was big news. That was exciting news. During the time that Johnny was an active wrestler. Although he seemed different and maybe not all there in the head. Johhny was one of the most amazing wrestlers between the ropes. Soon it was going to get to be seen again.
