It had been more than six years since he had stepped inside a ring. Being thrown through that table had taken away his only love. A love he thought he would never see again. Yet here he stood once more. It was hard to train or even convince people he could train when he couldn't even get in a ring with his students. He had been told more than once that his next bump could be his last and yet through the marvels of modern science he was prepping for his return.
Dressed in light brown cargo shorts and white sneakers Jonathan Alexander walked around the ring, running his hands over the ropes. The feel send chills down his spine. Was he really back in a ring? Was he really getting ready for a new start? He expected to wake up any second and find out it was all a dream. He walked to the nearby turnbuckle and leaned against it, feeling the leather against his skin brought a calming effect over him. This was home, this is where he belonged.
Being retired did have its perks though. He met his beautiful wife Alice in his school and he had gotten a chance to tour the world. It was nice to see things from a tourist standpoint instead of through the eyes of someone who was only around to do a job then leave.
“I thought I would never see this day again. The doctors told me that my back was too far gone to continue in this sport. That I should cut my loses and call it a career. I didn't want to listen to them but deep down I knew they were right. I didn't lose my smile or lose my love for this sport I just simply couldn't do it anymore.”
His voice was gruff, probably due to the subject matter. No one likes talking about hard times even though everyone dealt with them. He was no different and why should he be? His whole life had been taken away from him and yet here he stood taking it back by force.
“When PAW reached out to me and my wife I didn't know what I should say or do. Should I take the offer and run with it or stay retired and live out the life of an old injured wrestler. I didn't know what to do or who to turn to. Alice isn't ready to compete and all my former allies still wrestle in Japan so this lands on me. Do I risk it all for one more shot at glory? Or do I keep training the next generation and say I'm finished?”
“I sat and thought long and hard about what I should do. This wasn't an easy decision because everything I do now affects more than just me. Every decision I make falls back on Alice so I can't just run in half cocked anymore. Everything has to be thought out and discussed. In the end there was only one decision and it wasn't to take my talents to South Beach. It was to take PAW by storm.”
“I don't expect most of this roster to know who I am. Honestly I was probably retired when half of them started coming up. But they will soon all know my name. They will all know my legacy. And in the end they will know why I am to be feared. Enjoy your time in the spotlight because soon that spotlight will be mine.”
A door could be heard opening off in the distance followed by the steady sound of heels clicking on the floor. The pace was steady and grew louder with every step. The sound caught Jonathan's attention as he turned to see what was making the noise only to smile once he laid eyes upon his wife Alice. He leaned against the top rope as she slid into one of the seats in the back row, setting her purse down and looking up at her husband returning his smile.
"Hello love."
"Don't let me interrupt you. Just got curious."
She leaned back on the chair, the smile remaining on her pretty face.
"Oh no you weren't interrupting anything. I was just wrapping things up here anyways."
"You look extremely fine inside that ring."
She got up making it towards the ring. She would move herself inside in a graceful manner. Jonathan backed away from the ropes and motioned for her to climb in.
"This is home for me love. This is where I feel the most comfortable, outside of when I'm with you of course. Its just been so long that it feels kind of strange."
"I feel a strange sensation being in this ring. And still some fear. But after my training it is excitement taking over."
She made it next to him, giving him a small kiss on the cheek. He smiled as he put his arm around her shoulder bringing her in closer.
"For years this was all I knew. When it was taken from me I felt that same strange sensation you're talking about only because I wasn't here. All my training, all my work I had put in everything was a waste. But standing in this ring with you by my side knowing that one day it'll be you making a career makes it all worth it. This...."
He stepped away and held his arms out showing her the ring.
"This will soon be home. That excitement will take over every time you step in here and your training will take over. It'll be like second nature to you love."
She looked at him, cuddling rather close. For her only one thing mattered and that was him. It was easy to hear the frustration he felt the past years.
"One day I will own this ring. But before that, I wanna see my love rip them apart."
"You'll see that soon my love but you're right. One day you will own this ring. One day you'll win your first your match, your first title and suffer your first injury. I'll be beside you for every one of your firsts. Knowing you're beside me now though is all I can ask for."
"I love you madly Mister Alexander. And your right, one day. As I said, for now I concentrate on you."
She looked very happy and proud in this moment. He pulled her close and kissed her lips.
"And I love you Mrs. Alexander. I hope you'll be joining me in my corner for my debut match whenever that may be."
"Well I ain't got a contract, but if they allow it. I will be your cheerleader."
"I'm sure they'll allow you to escort me to the ring. I'll have a talk with Lady Munin though if I need to."
"If you flirt her up, you will be my first match."
Obviously she was joking. Alice by no means suffered from insecurity.
"You're the only one I need love. Besides, I'm pretty sure she's dating Alex Cross anyways. You don't have to worry."
He leaned in and kissed her again. He knew she didn't worry about his commitment but he still wanted to make her feel loved and appreciated. It was the least he could do considering the line of work they were in. One didn't always get to here positive things or be built up since everyone was always looking to tear you down to make themselves look better. It was just the nature of the sport, you had to love or it would kill you.
"Even if she was single I'd still choose you every time."
"It's okay Johnathan. As you know very well, I don't worry about such nonsense. Who sleeps with who and all that blah blah. People ruin their own stuff. I always had you. And at the end of the day, you come home with me."
She kissed him passionately while wrapping her arms around his waist.
"Exactly and I can't think of a better place to be than home with you my love."
He put his arms around her, holding her close.
"Now you just try to charm your way into my pants."
She stuck her tongue out.
"Some things just come naturally for me I guess."
He took a step back and put his arms up to fend off any possible assault she might send his way. She kept smiling before running at him with full speed. Playfully wrapping her body around him. He lifted her up and held her in his arms tightly.
"I take it you're ready to go home already?"
"Hey, I am going to fight you."
He sat her down and stepped back.
"Not in heels and a summer dress you're not. You'll tear something and then never be able to compete."
She kicked off her shoes, and ripped her dress up to her thigh.
"Excuses my dear."
"Okay, fine."
He quickly charged at her knocking her to the mat and transitioned into an armbar, pulling back on it forcing instant pain to shoot through her body and arm.
"Tap or I break it."
"Try me."
She rolled him over in the way Alexandra had shown. Her knee pressing hard into his back.
"Fuck, my back!"
He tried to push to his feet and roll out of it but her heels pressed harder into his back keeping him grounded.
"You win!"
He hit the mat a couple of times as she finally released the hold allowing him to roll onto his back to try and get relief.
"Fuck me that hurt."
"Shouldn't threaten me that you'll break my arm."
He sat up and slid into the nearby corner still favoring his back.
"You're right, I shouldn't have."
His eyes closed for a moment as he tried to get some relief in his back.
"Turn around love."
She got closer. He grabbed the top rope and pulled himself to his feet. It was the first time in the ring in seven years and already he was in pain just from a brief sparring session. What had he gotten himself into? His face was buried in the turnbuckle as he tried to shut out the pain in hopes it would go away on its own. She ran her hands softly over his skin. Massaging in a slow manner. He grunted as he rubbed his head against the leather in the turnbuckle. Honestly the feeling of her hands massaging the area felt wonderful and in some ways it was helping with the pain.
"I am sorry baby."
She kissed his neck.
"No need to apologize my back just locked up. It'll be fine once I ice it down later. I'll be sure to thank Alexandra for that move next time I see her since I know you didn't learn that from me."
He forced a smile as he turned around to face his wife, placing his hand on the side of her cheek gently.
"Well played love."
"I hope I didn't ruin you."
"I'll be fine love. Let's just get out of here so I can ice down my back before it locks up again."
He turned towards the ropes and climbed out, his wife Alice close behind him. The two held hands as they walked towards the locker room area.
