First off, Thanks everyone for a great Bad Moon Rising once again. I wanted to actually talk about that for a second, and to clue you in on a few things about how judging works here in PAW.
#1) SO, this is the basic rubric for those who have never seen it before.
CONTENT - (0-10)
ENTERTAINMENT VALUE - (0-10)
CHARACTER/STORYLINE ADVANCEMENT - (0-10)
BELIEVABILITY - (0-10)
ORIGINALITY - (0-10)
METHOD OF ATTACK - (0-10)
PARTICIPATION - (0-10)
Total- the total sum from each category.
As you can see the total is out of a possible 70 points. Usually, when this is showed to people, the first question that's asked is; What is that Participation score mean?
#2) Participation - Many moons ago, in a land far, far away, there lived this guy who put in a shit ton of time to write matches, place the card, and do the over all site maintenance for this E-fed. He watched as some handlers submitted segments, offered suggestions, offered to take a match, wrote extra material even when their RP limit was reached, just for the sake of telling a story, add little blurbs to the News & Rumors even if they weren't true...cause you know....rumors. He watched as some made sure to get everything in on time, and those that made sure it got in early. He watched as handlers posted first, or way early, confident in their writing and their RP that it didn't matter if their opponent saw it, that it could stand on it's own. Well, this guy saw all of this, and he said....those people need some sort of pay off for doing not only what they are supposed to do, but going above and beyond like that. So that guy, created a participation grade for a fed he ran way back when, and it was well received by those who were consistent in the fed anyways, but not so much by those who pretty much would always do the bare minimum.
That guy was me, and when I decided to step up to try and keep the fed from crumbling back in February, I talked it over with Nicole and Nate, and we agreed to give the participation grade a trial. Some were resistant, and then some really surprised us by saying they thought it was a good idea. The trial went, and slowly people began to realize that this is just one part of the grade, a total of the 10 that goes into the 70, and isn't going to affect the decision of matches except for in the cases of when it's very close already. The Participation grade breaks down as follows.
Grade = 2 automatic points for posting a RP before deadline. 1 point for posting 24 hours before deadline. 1 point for being the one who posts first. 3 points for any CD you may post other than your RP. 1 point for any submitted segments/match notes/writing a match. 1 point for getting any of that stuff in early, well before deadline. And finally, 1 point for a News and Rumor's segment. None of those are consecutive, meaning if you write two CD's, you don't get 6 points, but only 3. Same with News & Rumors, matches, or segments.
That being said, we didn't use Participation Grades in the Championship Match Decisions for Bad Moon Rising. They were included, but it was V that said some people were hamstringing themselves because maybe they didn't know. My argument was that it was in the rules, and we've already had this discussion OOC before. But then I got to thinking about it, and decided maybe he was right.
#3) The main argument against a participation grade has always been, 'So you're going to punish me because I don't have time to do anything but RP.' My answer to that is, 'I'm not punishing you, I'm rewarding people for going the extra mile.' That mentality doesn't hold a lot of weight in "Today's" society, but I was raised that if you go the extra mile you will eventually get rewarded for it. And even if that's not the way it works on the norm, maybe it should be.
The Argument always takes a turn at some point. "Well I don't have time to do all that, cause ........ (Fill in the blank)" I get it. You've got a hard job, or you're in school, or you have a family, kids, etc. I understand all that, but you don't know me, and to me that is saying that 'I' do have all this free time because I can do it. I don't. I just have a work ethic, and a commitment to the people who provide this game what they do, and that means that I have to make time to get stuff done because a whole bunch of handlers did what they were supposed to do, so I have to do the same. "Oh, so you're saying I have no work ethic." Not what I said at all, I said I have one. If you feel like you have to go on the defensive every time someone tells you one of their strengths, then more than likely you're dealing with some latent insecurities about yourself.
#4) Why a rubric, and not just a yay or nay? We have a rubric because we took note of all the different styles that came into this fed. PAW was founded by a handful of people who were coming out of another place, but still wanted to play with one another. Some of those handlers are still around. Some of those handlers moved on. Some of those handlers have made returns. The Rubric ensures that if you are promo heavy, then you'll get a fair shake versus a CD heavy handler. It's about the only way that I know of how we can have a fair system. Most places just read your stuff, and go based off a feeling. We like that feeling.....it's apart of the rubric under Entertainment Value. But we don't necessarily think that feeling should be the totality between victory and defeat, as I read plenty of stuff that gives me that feeling but is otherwise poorly done. Just like I've read perfectly constructed Roleplays by obviously well written individuals, that had about as much fervor as a tit mouse. So we have a rubric.
#5) For the upcoming shows, the Participation grade is back on. If you still want to argue the point, then please DM me or Nicole, and we'll talk about if it's still a good idea or not. But if you're on the negative end of the spectrum, and don't speak up, then we're going to assume that everyone is cool with it.
#6) I realize we all have bad days, bad weeks, sometimes even bad years. But when approaching one another, sometimes it's best to come in with a question, rather than a statement. Hey, I was just wondering if you could give me some feedback on why I lost? Hey man, did you forget a match thread for ADDICTION, cause I don't see it? Hey bro, do you mind if I do this?
I say this only because coming at any of us on staff with a bunch of attitude is not going to help your case. We've got enough good handlers here now that we don't have to listen to a lot of crap, or be talked to like we're dogs, and if you do that, more than likely you're going to get it right back in your face.
I'm extremely proud of this fed, as I know Nicole is as well. We've survived a lot of crap that quite frankly would have closed other places. I feel like we have the cream of the crop when it comes to writers, and I look forward to what story lines we can produce. At the end of the day we're all just people who like to write, and enjoy wrestling on some level. I've gotten to know some of you fairly well, and we've enjoyed sharing promo stuff, but more than that, basic writing stuff. My goal, as a writer, is to get better and to keep challenging myself. I hope that shows through in the role plays, and in our shows. Just be good to each other. At the end of the day this is just a game, and although we all take it a little seriously at times, remember to have fun. Don't be afraid to explore that loss. Don't be afraid to branch out beyond your normal comfort zones. You're all extremely talented. The fact that you've chosen this as an outlet of entertainment proves that you're creative. I have the feeling we're going to continue to see the bar raised even higher, and I can't wait.
Last, but not least. Thank You. Without you guys, PAW can't be. Keep up the good work.
