After Addiction has gone off the air, a camera man is filming a clearly distraught Kelsey Spencer pacing back and forth backstage. Aggressively removing her wrist tape, she throws it to the ground as she turns to the man.
“I did it again, you know!” she shouts in a rather hostile manner, on the verge of breaking into tears. “I blew it again! My whole life, I’ve been letting my parents down! They wanted me to study medicine; I ran away from home to become a professional wrestler.” She glances at the floor with angered eyes and flared nostrils, taking a deep breath and trembling as she exhales. “Now, I get to do it again when I call my mum tell her she’s gonna have to wait at least another fortnight for that surgery she needs, because I don’t have what it takes anymore!”
She slaps a box of stage equipment as she makes her way down to it, taking a seat like a little kid who has just been placed into time out. Burying her face in her hands, she sulks in self-pity as she mutters something incomprehensible to the viewer. She looks up at the sound of approaching footsteps, her cheeks stained with tears as her best friend Annabel timidly walks into frame. There’s no verbal greeting from Kelsey - in fact, she breaks eye contact and tries to hide the fact that she’s been crying.
Annabel stands there, looking very unsure of what to do. She heard the words that Kelsey said in the echoey hallway. Despite all they had said about there being no hard feelings, she has secretly been afraid of this. For a few moments she just stares. Then she does the only thing she can think of, dropping down to sit next to Kelsey and throwing her arms around her best friend.
Kelsey’s response? A reassuring tap on the shoulder. She’s never been one to show physical affection too often, especially when she’s upset, but it’s clear that she cares deeply about Annabel. “Did you, uhh...happen to hear any of that?” Kelsey asks weakly, clearing her throat and choking back the tears.
“Yeah, I did.” Annabel hides the sheepish look on her face by not releasing the hug. “I heard a good bit.”
Kelsey’s grip on Annabel’s shoulder tightens just enough to offer extra comfort. “I’m not mad at you, Anna. I’m mad at myself.” She sniffles, pulling out of the embrace momentarily to wipe away a stray tear. “We promised we’d go at each other with everything we had in that match, and there’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that tonight, you were absolutely the best wrestler out there. No-one can deny that.”
“And you and me made it together past two other really good wrestlers to be the last two. Think about how much that means! You did all the work on Leon, I just helped at the last minute. And you kept him from eliminating me too!” Anna finally tilts her head up to look Kelsey in the eye.
“That’s gracious of you,” Kelsey responds with a slight smile, before shaking her head. “Tonight shouldn't be and isn’t about me, though - it’s all about you. And if I couldn’t become champion tonight…” She places her hand back on Annabel’s shoulder as she concludes: “...I’m glad my best friend could.”
She pulls the champ into a full embrace once more as the scene fades out. Perhaps the moment everyone thought would cause friction between the pair has actually brought them closer together?
